Mount Washington Cog Railway
Available from Mount Washington Cog Railway
The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the first mountain climbing cog railway in the world, has been carrying riders to the top of the highest peak in the Northeast since 1869. Both steam and biodiesel locomotives travel the three hour round trip from the end of April to the beginning of December. A new audio tour in the coaches tells the riders about the history of the Cog, the white mountains and unique geology and climate of Mount Washington.
From the summit, the stunning landscapes are dramatic whether you see over all of New England or literally climb into and above the clouds.
The Cog offers free admission for all passengers to the Mount Washington Observatory Museum at the summit. This mountain is the home of the highest wind speed in the world ever observed by man.
Depending on the season, from two to ten trains daily depart from the Marshfield base station which is at 2700 feet elevation. The station offers great views from its restaurant, gift shop and free museum with an historic video.
The Cog is one of 16 White Mountain Attractions throughout this region of New Hampshire-roughly half way between Boston and Montreal.
Advance ticket purchase is recommended on line at thecog.com, where you can check on the schedule and special trains, or 603-278-5404.
